As a filmmaker I need to spend an awful lot of my
time out in the hills hunting. That is where I get
the footage from which the WildNewZealand series of
films evolve. My passion is Pig Hunting and I guess
a lot of that passion is derived from the loyalty
and ability of the dogs that I have bred, raised and
trained. The breed of the dogs I have in my pack
goes back over 30 years. A breed that consists of
mostly Sheep/cattle dog x with a smidgeon of Whippet
and Bull Dog thrown in.
As all Pig Hunters will know there is no
excitement quiet like that of catching Wild Boars
with your own team of dedicated dogs. Dogs that will
put their life on the line to serve their master.
These days I am likely to be out in the hills
hunting pigs for at least half of the week. The line
I breed and train have a high level of intelligence
and rarely get hurt. I do not use rip collars or
tracking gear with them because I do not find it
necessary. Will admit that tracking gear would be
handy at times but they are not the breed of dogs
that go too far to find.
All my dogs, that includes pups and older dogs
are expected to be social around people, not fight
amongst other dogs, they are guaranteed goat an deer
proof and they all develop wonderful personalities
because of the way I bring them up. From when they
are small pups they live in close proximity to us
and the tenants in my Back Packers Lodge and they
get a lot of attention. Anyone that comes to my
place or hunts with me remarks what beautiful dogs
they all are. That to me is hugely important and it
is not by chance they turn out like that it is the
way I bring them up. None of my dogs are ever
trained on tame wild pigs they only ever get to hunt
wild pigs out in the bush.
